Running Out of Time

Day 5 - Photo 5. Ouch! *Didn't turn out as I'd planned. But, okay this is part of the process. So, here was the intent. As the country struggles with the economy, war and the upcoming Presidential elections...driving home from shopping I noticed this broken fence and waited for the jogger I saw coming down the street. We build many "walls and fences" in our lives and many times we're a mere "ghost" of an image passing through and along those walls and fences. The broken fence and the mere presence of the jogger represented the fraction of time that we are players in the world and how eventually those walls and fences we've erected will not even be a footnote in history. *So techncally, the shutter speed was too slow, hence the slght camera shake and the runner nearly disappearing. I would have liked a sharper image and a more defined runner. But when I look at the image again I can almost forgive the technical shortcomings for the intent of the photo. Shot with a Nikon D2XS, 70-200mm lens @ 70mm and 100 ISO.

Okay, so in the light of a new day I don't feel as bad as I did last night about Day 5 - Photo 5. I don't feel GOOD about it, but I have to admit that I came very close to "cheating" on this one. When I shot the photo and then looked at it, I immediately thought, ah oh! I lesson learned here is "take your time and get it right Rick."

Perhaps a lesson may be - perfection in your eyes is not necessarily perfection in the eyes of your audience. I love this picture and am glad you sucked up whatever needed sucking and put it up, because I would have hated to miss it.

I think the image of the runner really gave the picture the feeling you were looking for - the transient nature of the world - plus the feeling that the fence will last longer than the runner.

Amy and I ran by that fence Sunday morning. We have run by it a few times; I have run by it many times, watching its gradual deterioration. She is training for a half-marathon and, poor girl, I'm her trainer. Everything broken and bent, tattered and torn, inspires me, and I hope for that time when these things inspire her, too. Sean
