There was a time, not too long ago, that I believed working for a newspaper was noble. There was a time, not too long ago, that I defined who I was by what I did. Those things are still true, more of less, though they've been tempered somewhat by time and experience.
I don't believe working for a newspaper is all that noble. There's no nobility in a corporation. And I don't define who I am by what I do. I've had to make too many compromises. Today I reminded myself...I do believe the pursuit of telling the truth is noble. Using a camera to shine light on the darkness is noble. Today I reminded myself that I define who I am...in what I believe. And I believe in doing the right thing. That's noble.
As photojournalists we must never abandoned the ideas of our ethics and integrity to keep pace with today's changing world and shrinking news space. Our ethics and integrity are all we have left. It's only those virtues we have left to offer. It's those virtues that will enable us to tell the truth and use our camera to shine light on the darkness.
And today I reminded myself I believe those virtues are still worth something. That's the real nobility of being a photojournalist.

No truer words have ever been spoken Rick, and it's a great reminder to everyone about the passion for the story that led us all on this path. It is noble, and it is good. To find the truth, and do your best to show the world. Even with limited news space, ads in places where they never existed before, and too many assignments for too few staffers. It is noble, and it's unbelievably important. A free press, and the photojournalists and reporters out there keeping things honest, are a big part of what keep our country great!
